In the original script for our film, it included a lot swearing, however after a brief conversatio with our lecturer, we decided to cut the swearing entirely. This allows us to enter film festivals/competitions and not have to stress about knowing if our film is fitting for an 'educational environment'.

Was this the right decision?

We put together a short survey, for which we received 58 responses.

The data we received is listed below.

WHERE DO YOU THINK SWEARING IS APPROPRIATE IN A MOVIE CONTEXT?

"INTENSE MOMENTS LIKE DEATH OR A JUMP-SCARE OR TO ENHANCE COMEDY"

"INTENSE PAIN / EMOTIONS"

"WHEN IT'S FOR COMEDIC OR DRAMATIC EFFECT

"ANGER"

"I THINK THAT DEPENDS ON THE CHARACTER AND WHO THEY ARE"

after the survey, i founf that many people(almost 100%) had the same view that swearing could enhance a scene depending on context.

In a context of education, swearing might frowned upon and in film festivals it might be banned full stop. This research ensured us that we made the correct decision to cut the swearing.
